A few weeks back, two of our favorite businesses in Lancaster had a grand opening at their new location on Orange Street. Vee and I have been huge fans of the Black Comb and Pink Lady as long as we have known about them. Jonathan and Brittany Leitzel moved their businesses to a larger spot just around the block from their original Duke Street location. Some of you from the cycling world might recognize the location as the former home of Orange Street Velo.
For their grand opening, Jonathan, Brittany, Pat, Paul, and Evan invited friends to stop by and see the location before they officially opened for business. Along with more space for the barbers (and room to expand), Brittany now has her own space with two hair washing stations and a mini lounge for her customers. A room with a football table was added with a kegerator for the guys.
Elliot & Co was also on hand with a pop-up shop set up in the back of the store. They had a mix of antiques and modern takes on classic items on hand for purchase.
It has been a lot of hard work for everyone, but the new Orange Street barber shop and salon has become one of the newest fixtures of the Lancaster downtown district.
I can’t believe I didn’t post this sooner. I was looking through some pictures and realized I never posted it. So here it is.
First off, I’m not a wedding photographer. It’s just not what I’m into. It’s not that I don’t like weddings, but I don’t want to have to deal with most brides. There have been two couples I have made an exception for, Dina and Tim Jackson, and Matt and Melinda Dishart. For Dina and Timmy’s wedding, I wasn’t even really an official photographer, but I happened to bring my camera with, and ended up taking some of their favorite pictures of the night. Matt and Melinda were a little different. Matt is the president of the cycling team I belong to, and when the first lady of the Empire asks you to shoot their wedding, you do it. All kidding aside, Matt and Melinda are a great couple, and I was honored to share the photography duties with her sister-in-law, Kathy on their big day.
I’ll admit, I was a bit apprehensive about shooting the wedding. I’m not a fan of staging people and taking their pictures, and I knew there were going to be a lot of wedding-type shots that they would want, and I just wouldn’t think of. That is where Kathy came in, and was a HUGE help. She did most of the staging, and took those wedding shots that I missed. As a team, I think we did a pretty good job. I also had another opportunity to shoot at The Black Comb as the groomsmen all got shaves before the wedding.
I also have to thank my lovely assistant for all of her help. Along with providing my photography services, we also brought the sound system for the wedding, and my lovely assistant did a great job hitting the queues for the music. It was also her encouragement that made me see it was just like any other shoot, except you might have some times where you can retake the shot to get what you want.
Last month, a friend of mine from the cycling world got married and before the ceremony, he wanted to treat himself and his best man to a straight razor shave. There’s just something about it that is so relaxing. It’s a fine art that is becoming harder and harder to find. When he asked me where to go, there’s only one place in Lancaster that I trust to put a razor to my skin, The Black Comb Barber Shop. Located at 141 North Duke Street, they are Lancaster’s only retro barber shop and specializes in straight razor shaving. Whether you are looking for a retro or modern cut, they have you covered. The Pink Lady also has a chair in a separate part of the shop to provide hair and make-up styling for the ladies.
Here is a quick video created by David B. Godin for the shop. It is what hooked me, and I haven’t seen another barber since.
Owner, Jonathan Leitzel, unexpectedly had some openings the morning of the ceremony, and was able to fit the guys in. To put it into perspective, with now having four barbers on staff, they are just starting to not be booked out a month in advance. When the appointment opened up less than a week out, it was one more thing that made for a perfect day. They guys loved the experience of enjoying a beer and getting a close shave.
Thanks again Jonathan for letting me stop in and capture it all. Looking forward to doing it again sometime!
