Arounkone Sananikone asked if I would take some bikes from the shop, and get some pictures to use on the Pure Energy Cycling site to help usher in the cyclocross season. Pure Energy Cycling and Java House is located in Lambertville, NJ, right along the D&R Canal Tow Path. The cinder trail is a great place to ride, and offers over 20 miles of beautiful views of the Delaware River and Washington Crossing State Park.
I had some amazing bikes to choose from, but I narrowed it down to the Colnago Prestige, Colnago World Cup, Blue Norcross, and Ridley X-Fire. I took the Blue Norcross down to the trail first, and stumbled upon some old and forgotten rail cars that have been sitting just outside of Lambertville. They made a great background to shoot, and I’m looking forward to using them more in the future.
A Parlee ESX also happened to be in the shop, built up with Ultegra Di2, and ROL wheels. I couldn’t resist taking a few shots of that as well.
The Bucks County Classic is coming up on September 13th and 14th in southeastern PA, and will include some of the best racers in the US. One of the teams that will be competing is a group of ladies I’ve had a chance to work with plenty of times this year, the Fearless Femme Cycling Team. These women come from all walks of life, and have had a very successful year, led by veteran Tina Pic. Their distinctive orange jerseys are easy to pick out in a peloton, and really pop in pictures. If you have a chance to catch the road race on Saturday from Doylestown to New Hope, or the Thompson Criterium on Sunday in Doylestown, make sure to cheer for the Fearless Femmes in orange!
Team Colavita/Fine Cooking lined up in Binghamton, NY this past Saturday evening for the 13th stop on the NCC Calendar. The new downtown venue and race course for the 31st annual Chris Thater Memorial played to the favor of the Colavita/Fine Cooking crit squad. The race was controlled by Jessi Prinner, Jen Purcell, Lenore Pipes and Mary Zider who were able to gobble up several mid-race primes. In the final laps of the race the Colavita/Fine Cooking train was able to refocus and deliver Erica Allar for a second place sprint finish. Allar continues to dominate the overall individual standings while Team Colavita/Fine Cooking continues to hold the #1 spot in the overall team rankings.
Up next for Team Colavita/Fine Cooking is the 22nd edition of The Staenberg Group Gateway Cup in St. Louis, MO. The Staenberg Group Gateway Cup takes place in four unique neighborhoods in the heart of St. Louis. All four days of The Gateway Cup will be on the USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC).
If you are on the Colvita-Fine Cooking email list, you might have noticed some pictures of mine of Erica Allar and Mary Zider were used to announce Colvita-Fine Cooking’s roster for the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium. Mary had contacted me after Iron Hill and loved the pics. It’s always fun and rewarding to see your pics out there for everyone to see.
I’m hoping to get to work with them more in the future!

Team Colavita/Fine Cooking, ranked #1 in USA Cycling’s NCC Championships Standings in both the individual and team category has announced the roster for the 31st Annual Chris Thater Memorial on Saturday, August 23rd at 6:00pm in downtown, Binghamton, NY. The Crit squad will include Erica Allar, the 2013 defending champion, Jessi Prinner, Jen Purcell, Lenore Pipes, and Mary Zider. Allar currently leads the individual standings by a 263-point-margin over second place. Team Colavita/Fine Cooking, along with Allar, will look to further increase their place in the rankings this weekend.
In the final event of the day, the men ripped through the course to determine the men’s 2014 USA Cycling cross-country champion. Todd Wells (Specialized), Kerry Werner (BMC Project Dirt), Stephen Ettinger (BMC) all raced to the front, but Jeremiah Bishop (Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition), Cameron Dodge (Pure Energy Cycling), and Alexander Grant (Sho-Air/Cannondale) were not about to let them go. By now, the crowd in the Heckle Pit had grown to full capacity and the sound was incredible. Riders rode through a mass of humanity as they slogged their way up the hill.
Wells was able to make a decisive move, leaving Werner over a minute and a half behind as he crossed the line for the win. The move strung the leaders out and Bishop and Grant followed Werner by 30 second intervals for third and fourth place. Cameron Dodge rounded out the top five, almost 4 minutes behind Wells.
Last month, a friend of mine from the cycling world got married and before the ceremony, he wanted to treat himself and his best man to a straight razor shave. There’s just something about it that is so relaxing. It’s a fine art that is becoming harder and harder to find. When he asked me where to go, there’s only one place in Lancaster that I trust to put a razor to my skin, The Black Comb Barber Shop. Located at 141 North Duke Street, they are Lancaster’s only retro barber shop and specializes in straight razor shaving. Whether you are looking for a retro or modern cut, they have you covered. The Pink Lady also has a chair in a separate part of the shop to provide hair and make-up styling for the ladies.
Here is a quick video created by David B. Godin for the shop. It is what hooked me, and I haven’t seen another barber since.
Owner, Jonathan Leitzel, unexpectedly had some openings the morning of the ceremony, and was able to fit the guys in. To put it into perspective, with now having four barbers on staff, they are just starting to not be booked out a month in advance. When the appointment opened up less than a week out, it was one more thing that made for a perfect day. They guys loved the experience of enjoying a beer and getting a close shave.
Thanks again Jonathan for letting me stop in and capture it all. Looking forward to doing it again sometime!
Over time, I’ll be going back through shoots I’ve done over the past few years, and add them to the galleries.
By the time the amateurs finished up, the Heckle Pit was already starting to fill up. The Lone Wolf Cycling crew had signs, tape, and a rowdy group ready to cheer on and heckle their favorite riders. Lea Davison (Specialized) and Georgia Gould (Luna) were battling it out from the first lap. Evelyn Dong (Backcountry.com) was not too far away, but was never close enough through the Heckle Pit to really contend.

The 2014 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships was my first mountain bike event I have shot. It definitely was a massively fun event. Besides having to walk up and down the ski slopes at Bear Creek Mountain Resort and Conference Center, it was so much fun hanging out with friends from the cycling world, meeting new ones, and catching these great athletes battling through the rocks and trees for their chance to claim the stars and stripes for themselves.
This gallery is from the morning of Saturday, July 19th, 2014, and includes Cross Country Cat 1 Male 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-48, 50-54, Female 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, and men’s and women’s single speed.
To finish things off for the 2014 Iron Hill Twilight Criterium, here are the podium pictures from the pro races.
In the women’s race, Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) stands on the top step with Amy Cutler (FCS|Zngine p/b Mr. Restore) and Kacey Lloyd (Fearless Femme p/b Pure Energy Cycling-Vie13). Mellow Mushroom teammate, Laura Jorgensen was presented with the Laps Leader jersey, Van Gilder joined her to be presented with the overall leader’s jersey.
For the men, Daniel Holloway (Athlete Octane Racing) stood atop the podium with Bobby Lea (Custom Velo) and David Cueli (Team United HealthCare / The 706 Project). Cueli returned to the podium for the Under 25 and Laps Leader’s jerseys. Frank Travieso (Team United HealthCare / The 706 Project) was awarded the overall leader’s jersey, with Cueli and David Guttenplan (SeaSucker/Guttenplan Coaching) joining him.
The Iron Hill Twilight Pro Men’s Criterium capped the night with two separate breakaways lapping the field by the end of the race. An early break that contained current national criterium champion Daniel Holloway (Athlete Octane Cycling), Bobby Lea (Custom Velo), Eric Workowski (Team Alliance Environmental), David Cueli (Team UnitedHealthcare/The 706 Project), Scott Thomas (L&M Group-Richoh New Zealand), and Kevin Mullervy (Champion Systems – Stan’s NoTubes) lapped the field with a little less than half the race left.
Another break led by Tim Rugg (Battley Ducati-Spokes Etc. p/b District Taco) caught the field with around 12 laps to go. Lea tried to make another move off the front, but the field would not let him go with only a few laps left. In the sprint, Holloway claimed the win, with Lea and David Cueli (Team United HealthCare / The 706 Project) rounding out the podium.
